The 2011 Libyan civil war (Arabic: الحرب الأهلية في ليبيا عام 2011 / ALA-LC: al-ḥarb al-ahlīyah fī Lībiyā ‘ām 2011) is an ongoing armed conflict in the North African state of Libya being fought between forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi and his regime and those seeking to depose him.[35][36] The situation began on 15 February 2011 as a series of peaceful protests which were met with violent responses by the Gaddafi regime. The protests escalated into an uprising that spread across the country, with the forces opposing Gaddafi establishing a government based in Benghazi named the National Transitional Council whose goal is to overthrow the Gaddafi led government and hold democratic elections
